Skye Terrier

Skye Terrier‘s originate from Scotland, is a beautiful long haired terrier (it requires a lot of grooming) with a pleasant disposition and is very loyal to its owner. However one thing to take note when having the Skye terrier in the presence of friends, the Skye terrier does not take kindly to strangers and will fight if provoked or bothered. So it’s advised to have them on a leash, especially when bringing them outdoor for walks.

An approximation of their size is in height they are 10 inches (25 cm), in length they are 41 1/2 inches (105 cm) and can be 25 lbs. (11.3 kg) with females being slightly smaller. Skye Terrier’s have a double fur coat that is quite long in appearance. Their undercoat is soft and woolly whereas their outer coat is hard, straight and flat and measures 5 -1/2 inches (14 cm) long.

The Skye Terrier’s fur coat ranges from black, dark or light blue, gray, fawn, or cream in color. Oddly enough, their beautiful coat does not come to its full potential until around 3 years of age. It is advised that its coat is left natural but still should be brushed at least once per week.

To avoid problems with their feet, particularly around and between the toes and foot pads, it is always advisable to do some minor grooming to keep debris such as twigs or mud from building up (this can be done by you or a professional groomer).

Skye Terrier – Under the Threat of Extinction?

Although this is a relatively healthy breed of terrier, statistics show that in 2005 there was only an estimated 30 Skye Terrier born, meaning this breed is under the threat of extinction. An estimate of 40 years is when they may be extinct. Known to live up to 16 years, the Skye Terrier typically lives 10-14 years of age on average.
