The West Highland Terrier is more commonly called Westies and it is a Scottish breed of terrier. They are best known for their distinctive white coats. Westies have small, erect pointed ears and bright dark deep set eyes topped off with a small black nose. They have a very strong bone structure for a terrier of their size.

West Highland Terrier - One of the Smaller Terrier Breeds

One of the more smaller breeds of terrier, The West Highland Terrier weigh in around 15 and 20 pounds (6.8 and 9.1 kg) for males and 13 and 16 pounds (5.9 and 7.3 kg) for females. Their height averages between 9 to 11 inches (23 to 28 cm).

Westies are almost completely non-shedding, but require regular grooming so you must be ready to spend the effort and time for it; they have a soft dense undercoat and a rough outer coat that’s about 2 inches long. This breed of terrier requires frequent brushings to keep the oils in their coat well distributed and clean.

The West Highland Terrier are a more sensitive breed where bathing them too much will result in skin irritation; they are more prone to allergies and dry skin issues as well. Using baby oriented, soft skin or detergent free shampoo when bathing Westies will also help keep their skin hydrated. They should be groomed at minimal every 2 months and, as needed, bathed and brushed between grooming. Visit our sister site to learn more about Grooming a West Highland Terrier.

West Highland Terrier – A Highly Adaptable Breed

You should seperate them from other dogs when possible because West Highland Terrier are highly accepting of other people and animals but are known to be scrappy with other dogs. This breed is highly adaptable to most living situations but require plenty of exercise since they are a high energy dog type. The average lifespan of a West Highland white terrier is up 11-14 years and sometimes longer.

Welsh Terrier is one of the many breeds of British Terriers. These terriers were originally bred for hunting small game such as: rodents, foxes and badgers but are now bred for shows or companionship.

The Welsh Terrier is compact, sturdy and medium in size. Their measurements are 15.5 in. (39.5 cm) in height and 20-22 lbs (9-10 kg) in weight. This terrier’s is rectangular in body shape with an elongated or brick shaped face which is contributed by the whiskers and beard.

A Non Shedding Breed

The Welsh Terrier has 2 coats: undercoat for insulation and for on top of that an abrasive fur that helps protect them from the elements. This dog does not shed but does require regular brushing or else their hair color gets a faded look from their dead hair.

The fur on the Welsh Terrier is tan colored on the head, under belly and legs and has a black or sometimes grizzled saddle (back). This terrier is suitable for both city and country living and if raised under the right hands they are a happy, energetic and rarely shy dog. So it’s up to you to bring out the best in a very lovable breed of terrier during your grooming and training activities.

Welsh Terrier – Active & Obedient

The Welsh Terrier are known to respond well to orders, also being very obedience and love anything to keep them active so that’s make the job much easier for you.

The Welsh Terrier is known for their hunting instincts and will chase almost anything such as: dry leaves, cats or even small children. This terrier has a durable healthy body with only some known health problems that include: Thyroid problems, skin allergies, glaucoma, and epilepsy. A healthy Welsh Terrier will lead an overall long life; they typically live 12-13 years if properly taken care of.

The Staffie, Stafford, Staffross, Staffy or Staff is other names for the Staffordshire bull terrier. This terrier has a stocky athletic build, medium in size with a well defined muscular body. Because this breed is naturally muscular, they appear intimidating to other, but they do have a natural fondness for other people. With this in mind they are not well suited for guarding purposes. So don’t be deceived by it’s looks.

Active Terrier Breed

The Staffordshire bull terrier also has a good tolerance level with children. They adapt well to any sort of living situation but because they are an active breed they require a lot of exercise so taking them outdoor often is a good idea.

They have a short fore face, a wide mouth, dark round eyes and small ears. The Staffordshire bull terrier also have very pronounced cheek muscles, with their lips showing no signs of looseness meaning they seldom drool. The Staffordshire bull terrier has a nice smooth fur coat that clings tightly to their body which comes in many colors such as: brindle, black, red, fawn, blue, white, or any blending of these colors with white with liver-colored and black and tan terriers that less common.

The Staffie is Overall a Healthy Breed

This terrier is 14 to 16 in (36 to 41 cm) in height and weigh in at 24 to 32 lb (11 to 15 kg) (male dogs are normally heavier).

An overall healthy breed of dog, the Staffordshire bull terrier can suffer from health problems that are also common to other dog breeds such as: cataracts, hip dysplasia and respiratory (breathing) problems. If you are purchasing a Staffie from a breeder, always be sure the breeder is reputable because others may try to sell you a pup that appears healthy but could turn out not to be as such. The Staffie can live for 12-14 years on average.

Originally bred to be an all purpose farm dog (used to kill vermin, for herding and for hunting) the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier also makes a great pet for any household because of their lovable nature.

Because it has hair instead of fur, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has a unique trait amongst other dog breeds – it is a hypoallergenic dog, meaning a person with allergies or asthma can own this dog with little or no allergic reactions.

Wheaten Terrier’s Rarely Shed

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has a square structured build and an average height of 18.5 inches (47cm) and weighs about 35 to 40 pounds (16-18kg) for males. Females being slightly smaller are around 17.5 inches (44cm) in height and weighs 30-65 pounds (14-16kg).

Their hair color ranges between wheat and white, which does not appear until maturity – puppies are born darker and lighten as they age. Because Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier’s have hair instead of fur, they rarely shed at all, only a few hairs per day (similar to a human).

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier do require their hair having to be trimmed occasionally since it continues to grow longer and longer. When training a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, it is always best to use a less harsh tone or else the end result is a dog that either fears you or becomes constantly aggressive.

Loves Humans and Attention

Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier love humans as much as they love attention. So you can have different family and friends giving it more attention especially during the initial period of ownership. Although they are a healthy breed of dog, the Soft Coated Wheaten terrier does sometime have health issues such as, problems with their eyes and hips. On average, the Wheaten lives up to 12-15 years.

Skye Terrier‘s originate from Scotland, is a beautiful long haired terrier (it requires a lot of grooming) with a pleasant disposition and is very loyal to its owner. However one thing to take note when having the Skye terrier in the presence of friends, the Skye terrier does not take kindly to strangers and will fight if provoked or bothered. So it’s advised to have them on a leash, especially when bringing them outdoor for walks.

Skye Terrier Measures and Coat

An approximation of their size is in height they are 10 inches (25 cm), in length they are 41 1/2 inches (105 cm) and can be 25 lbs. (11.3 kg) with females being slightly smaller. Skye Terrier’s have a double fur coat that is quite long in appearance. Their undercoat is soft and woolly whereas their outer coat is hard, straight and flat and measures 5 -1/2 inches (14 cm) long.

The Skye Terrier’s fur coat ranges from black, dark or light blue, gray, fawn, or cream in color. Oddly enough, their beautiful coat does not come to its full potential until around 3 years of age. It is advised that its coat is left natural but still should be brushed at least once per week.

To avoid problems with their feet, particularly around and between the toes and foot pads, it is always advisable to do some minor grooming to keep debris such as twigs or mud from building up (this can be done by you or a professional groomer).

Skye Terrier – Under the Threat of Extinction?

Although this is a relatively healthy breed of terrier, statistics show that in 2005 there was only an estimated 30 Skye Terrier born, meaning this breed is under the threat of extinction. An estimate of 40 years is when they may be extinct. Known to live up to 16 years, the Skye Terrier typically lives 10-14 years of age on average.

Looking for a ideal family dog? Known as one of the more popular terrier breeds from Great Britain, the Sealyham terrier is an even tempered calm breed that is friendly and alert. Sealyham’s are loved because they have a friendly disposition, which makes them great with children and also equal as a devoted watch dog for a family.

Sealyham a Double Coated Terrier

Since the Sealyham was bred to work in packs, they also get along with other dogs quite well. So you would have no worries about bringing in the Sealyham to a existing group of dogs. As with all dog breeds, this terrier needs an occasional walk but can live well in apartments or indoors for the most part. The Sealyham has a long, broad rectangular head with flat cheeks. Sealyham’s are a double coated terrier with a soft and dense undercoat and a hard, wiry weather resistant outer coat.

Their fur color is predominantly white, white with lemon, blue and brown. They can sometimes have black in their color. If the fur is kept untrimmed they look almost like a goat but without the horns and require regular brushing.

Sealyham Measures

Sealyham’s can be up to and a little over 31cms (12ins) and can weigh around 9kgs (20 lbs). Females Sealyham are slightly smaller than the males. The Sealyham has eyes that are medium in size and set wide apart. The eye color is dark brown or almost black. For its small size, the Sealyham can move at very quick pace. They have powerful hindquarters and a muscular neck. They have large thick padded compact front feet with strong nails but their hind feet are smaller and compact. Their average lifespan is 9 – 15 years.

The Scottish terrier (also called Aberdeen Terrier and more popularly known as the Scottie) is a small terrier with a muscular body and neck. If you love small dogs, then the Scottish Terrier could be what you are looking for.

They have short legs with a cobby (a dog whose body length is equal to or lesser than their height) and sturdy build. The Scottie’s height for both sexes is roughly 11-15 inches (28-38 cm), their height is around 28 cm (11 in) and they generally weigh 8.5-10 kg (19-22 lb) and females are 8-9.9 kg (18-22 lb).

Scottish Terriers can be Territorial

The Scottie has bright small almond shaped eyes that are either dark brown or almost black in color. Their fur has a weather resistant outer coat that is hard, wiry and long and a dense soft under coat. The coat can come in many colors ranging from dark gray to jet black or a mixture of black and brown (brindle).

A wheaten coat (straw to almost white in color) uncommonly occurs which sometimes confuses the Scottie with the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier or West Highland white terrier. Scotties are known to be territorial and they are also very alert, quick to move and can be a feisty breed. They are also a loving breed with a touch of stubbornness to them and they make a good watch dog since they have a tendency to bark at strangers. Originally bred to hunt and fight badgers, they are known for digging and chasing small vermin.

It is recommended that you have them on a leash when taking them for a walk. In terms of health, sometimes Scotties can develop certain cancers, with bladder cancer being the most likely type they will catch. The Scottie generally lives up to 11-13 years of age.

The Rat Terrier, an American dog breed originally used as a farm dog to kill vermin (one report shows on a single Rat terrier that killed well over 2,000 vermin in a rat infested barn in a period of around 7 hours time), is now used as a house helper or family pet. Therefore it’s an added bonus of the Rat Terrier if your house happens to have vermins that needs to be cleared.

Rat terriers come in many different types of colors and multiples of colors for you to choose from such as: black tan point with piebald spotting (black tricolor), also common are blue and brown tricolors as well as red, sable (orange-red), pearls, brindle and lemon. Ticking in the coat can occur (light flecks of color) and they are known to be brindle (black and brown).

Rat Terrier is Not a Jack Russell

A Rat terrier’s weights usually ranges around 12 – 35lb (5.5 – 16kg) and are 14 – 23in. (35.5 – 58.5cm) in. In terms of appearance, the Rat terrier is often mistaken for Jack Russell terriers even though their temperaments and profiles are completely different. Rat terriers always have a short single coat, making them very simple to groom, it only requires occasional brushing (about once per week). They are cheerful dogs by norm and at times calmer and more sensitive.

They are an ideal pet for almost any living situation as long as they get their daily exercise which is a short 30 minute walk.

If they have a fenced in yard for a play area, this breed of terrier have been known to be diggers so extra caution is necessary if you are leaving your Rat terrier outside unsupervised.
The Rat terrier has an average lifespan of 13 – 16 years, and has been known to live an excess of 18 years if well taken care of.

Norwich Terriers are small, compact terriers with links to Irish Terriers. This breed of terrier is fearless, friendly, and energetic which makes him perfect for anyone who wants a small dog to play with daily and takes on walks or even jogs.

They also make very good watchdogs as they are alert and let everyone know when there are strangers about. Unlike many terriers, Norwich Terriers are good with children and with other pets and are all around affectionate and friendly. However, like any terrier, Norwiches can be independent and willful, especially if they have not been taught that humans are the leaders of the pack and they are to obey. Norwich Terriers should be socialized to other animals and kids from an early age however in order to encourage friendliness. They shouldn’t be let off leash in an unsecured area because their breeding leads them to go after small animals with little regard for their own safety.

Norwich Terriers Lives Long

Norwich Terriers should be groomed regularly and exercised stringently in order to keep them healthy. The exercise should be variable and different as well as daily or else the dog will end up being destructive or neurotic from boredom. However, if you are willing to commit to this, this dog can thrive even in small apartments, let alone larger properties.

Norwich Terriers are some of the longer lived terriers, with a lifespan of twelve to sixteen years and very few health problems. They can be prone to things like seizures though and should sleep indoors to mitigate skin irritations.

Norwich Terriers are excellent family dogs and do best in a family that will do lots of fun activities with their dog. If this is you, or if you are simply an active person who can train this dog, a Norwich Terrier may be perfect.
