Terrier Grooming

Terrier GroomingWhen it comes to grooming a terrier the first thing you should know is that there are multiple types of terriers and some have soft coats like the cute little Yorkie’s (Yorkshire) that you see people carrying in their purse because they’re so tiny, their hair is usually long and takes a great deal of grooming to keep it looking nice, regular brushing and clipping should be part of their regime to keep their fur looking beautiful.

Wire haired terriers like a Fox Terrier are not groomed with clippers, rather they are groomed through a process called plucking in which hair that would normally fall out is removed, about 5 or 6 strands at a time by pinching it between your thumb and pointer or middle finger and removing it with a quick wrist movement while the other hand holds the skin tight in the plucking area to help with the process.

Stripping & Plucking

Stripping and plucking achieve the same results but stripping requires the aid of a stripping knife and plucking is done by hand. The grooming process for both of these types isn’t all that different except when it comes to the grooming of the head and face. If you plan to show your terrier never use clippers on a coat that needs stripping, it will remove the correct texture and color for showing the terrier in the ring.

Stripping is done in areas where you would normally use clippers, by gripping a small amount of hair between your thumb and the stripping knife and pulling in the direction that the hair grows, being sure to pull the hair straight and not bend it, this will ensure removal of only dead hairs and maintain the natural texture. If you haven’t got special training in this technique, we strongly advice you to turn to a professional groomer for help!

Grooming your Terrier Every Day

Yorkshire TerrierGrooming your terrier every day is important as it is for all dogs, just daily brushing makes a difference and helps prevent tangles and mats in their fur. If you’re not comfortable grooming your terrier yourself, shop around for a good groomer, ask other owners (if you know any) where they take their dogs, especially if you plan to show your terrier. Ask for references, prices and examples of their work, if you want your terrier to be plucked also ask how familiar they are with the hand plucking process to ensure the best grooming for your little champion.
