Terrier Grooming Supplies

Dog Grooming KitTerriers, like any dog, require certain things to keep them clean and attractive. There are many grooming supplies out there, but there are some basics you should have no matter what and these can build the foundation for anything else you might want to purchase for your dog’s grooming needs. The following is a list of basic terrier grooming supplies you’ll want in order to groom your terrier.

A Brush and a Comb

Some terriers have a wiry overcoat and a soft undercoat, some are one texture all the way through. Regardless of coat type, you’ll want a good rubber backed brush and a wide toothed comb. A slicker brush is the best way to handle softer coats while a wide comb can take care of the more tangled overcoat. A slicker brush has a wooden or plastic handle and fine soft or hard bristles. Don’t cheap out on these products as they should last your dog’s lifetime, or at least a good chunk of it, and a better quality brush does a better job.

Dog Shampoo

A good shampoo is important for getting rid of dirt build up in your dog’s coat. You want something formulated for your terrier’s type of hair and you don’t want to overdo it or you’ll strip out the essential oils in your dog’s coat. Check the ingredients for things like vitamin E and protein and make sure it’s right for your dog.

Dog Toenail Clippers

A good pair of clippers can make the nail care for your terrier a lot easier. Get a sturdy one with a good edge on the clippers so the chore is quick.
Grooming Supplies

Straight Scissors and Thinning Shears

Because a terrier’s coat is often wiry on the outer layer and soft on the inner, the hairs can grow in unevenly and need to be trimmed and thinned out to achieve a more professional and tidier appearance. Straight scissors are used to trim larger pieces of hair while the shears can be used for fine detail work. If your dog has a beard and ear hair, they have to be trimmed too; as well as the tail which is sometimes trimmed to a point.

An Electric Clipper

An electric clipper is a great way to quickly clip larger portions of your terrier. This way, you can use your straight scissors and thinning shears for the more fiddly portions of your dog. Use a clipper with adjustable blades as different terriers require different blades to get the ideal result.

A Grooming Table

A grooming table is very useful for keeping your dog off the floor where the hair and dirt will end up and so that your dog is at a higher elevation for your ease. Just be sure to keep one hand on your dog at all times so he doesn’t fall.

Having these basics will ensure that you have a well groomed terrier. It may not be show quality, but for show quality, you’ll need a whole new level of grooming supplies for terriers. These things are good enough for weekly or daily grooming sessions.
