Welsh Terrier Grooming Tips

Welsh Terrier Grooming

Welsh Terrier´s need a full grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. The coat has to be plucked at least twice per year and the dead hair can be pulled by hand. The skin is broken-coated as it is the combination of soft and wiry hair. The hair does not shed off naturally but has to be plucked to allow new hair to grow. The tools that can be used are Slicker, stripping knives, rubber gloves etc. Give a bathe to the dog only when necessary not too often, otherwise it will dry out their skin. It is to be dried only naturally.

Check the Eyes and Ears

The debris filled at the corners of the eyes should be cleaned daily with a wet towel. The ears must be cleaned only if vat is visible. Ears should be pink inside which is the sign of healthy ears. A soft ear solution can be used to clean the ears. The hair growing inside the ear may trap water and thus bacteria and it is therefore a good idea to cut this using tweezers.

Welsh Terrier’s Teeth

Brushing can be done everyday by gradually making the dog adapt to the usage of brush and paste. Otherwise, a tooth scraper can be used to get rid of plaque deposited.

Welsh Terrier’s Nails & Paws

Nails should be clipped once in two weeks and doggy scissors or pliers should be used for this purpose. It is very important to check your Welsh´s paws daily and trim them once in every two weeks.

A note though, if you have a show dog, hand stripping your terrier is only recommended if you’ve had some prior training or experience in performing it!
